Science Olympiad

The Chico Science Fair is excited to partner with the Gateway Science Museum to introduce the 2022-23 Science Olympiad! Butte County students have an opportunity to participate in 2 ways (see chart to right).
Founded in 1984, Science Olympiad is the leading national team STEM competition, providing standards-based challenges to 5,500 teams at 400 tournaments in all 50 states.
Science Olympiad events represent a range of scientific disciplines encouraging a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology.
Events are one of 4 types:
  • Core Knowledge- These are typically open note tests, materials allowed are specified. Partners may collaborate during the test.
  • Build- A device is built in advance to perform a specific task. The device is tested multiple times prior to the event and data is recorded in a log (counted as part of the score). An additional small detail about the goal (like a specific distance within target range) will be given at the event requiring students to make minor last minute adjustments for best results.
  • Laboratory/Hands-on- Students will apply their background knowledge on a given topic in a hands-on task. This may include a report written within a given time frame.
  • Hybrid- a combination of the above

All events are represented by student pairs bringing a collaborative element to even the more traditional test format events. Participating students will develop skills in problem solving, observation, communication, time management, preparation, and use of the scientific method while learning about a particular scientific topic in depth.
Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond and work together towards a shared goal.
