Dear Friends of the Chico Science Fair,
2022 has been a year of investigation and pivot for Chico student scientists and the Chico Science Fair. With the support of volunteers and donors like you, the Chico Science Fair has been able to showcase and celebrate the hard work of local student scientists who presented their scientific expertise. In the 1.5 years since our last in-person event many meetings were held with our board to develop and implement a new direction for the future with STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics) learning in mind.
A partnership with the Gateway Science Museum provided the opportunity to plan and implement a pilot Science Olympiad program as an alternative to the individual investigations and display boards that have been the past focus of the Chico Science Fair. This culminated in our 2 day event held in May of 2022. Four fifth grade classes came to the Gateway Science Museum for a set of engineering competitions, complete with a leader board and awards. The Gateway Science Museum also hosted a full day of science competitions and investigations for the public. These events resulted in great enthusiasm to pursue holding Science Olympiad events in the future. We are in the planning stages of a large Science Olympiad Competition to be held April 1st, 2023, open to K-12 students throughout Butte County.
Science Olympiad is a national event designed to increase a student’s interest in STEM fields and provide recognition for outstanding achievement in team events. Students compete in different standards-based challenges from a variety of science and engineering fields. Opportunities exist for student teams to compete in regional Science Olympiad with the top teams advancing to State then on to National levels.
We have hired Sarah Holden as our Science Olympiad Coordinator and she will be involved in planning, social media, fundraising, promotion and the organization of the event itself. We are excited to have her expertise and enthusiasm.
Our success thus far is because of the generous help of volunteers, judges, organizers, and financial contributions of all sizes. The Chico community has once again confirmed our support and investment in the future of science!
The last Chico Science Fair was held just prior to the pandemic closures in spring of 2019 at the Chico Masonic Family Center. Projects were on public display on February 26, with judging taking place on February 25. Hundreds of entrants demonstrated excellence in numerous science and engineering disciplines. We thank those of you who attended for expanding your mind by visiting that Fair, together with your family and friends.
Our upcoming Science Olympiad will be developed with the following activities:
Here are three ways to participate in 2023 with the Chico Science Olympiad:

Thank you for your ongoing and generous contributions to the Chico Science Fair in support of the young scientists of the Chico area.

Our upcoming Science Olympiad will be developed with the following activities:
- Several elementary schools will be offered a Family Fun Science Olympiad Night, with 3-5 different investigations and engineering competitions. Teams will work together to use strategy, background knowledge and innovation to complete the tasks or solve the problems. Prizes will be awarded and students will be provided with tools to form teams and compete in our Science Olympiad event on April 1st, 2023.
- Butte County middle and high school science departments will be given in-service and
- April 1st, 2023, the Chico Science Olympiad will be held in partnership with The Gateway Science Museum. 6-8 events will be held for each B Division (grades 6-8) and C Division (grades 9-12). 4-8 events will be held for A Division (grades K-5). Teams form prior to this event. Within each team, 2-3 student partners will be chosen for each event to represent their team in competition. A student may compete in one event for each of the 2 time slots. Team points will accumulate throughout the competition with a leaderboard updating scores as the day progresses. An award ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the event. We will provide some resources and encourage a few teams to participate in the large regional event, consisting of 23 competitive activities, tentatively held March 4 in Sacramento, Ca.
Here are three ways to participate in 2023 with the Chico Science Olympiad:
- The 2023 Chico Science Olympiad will be Saturday April 1st, 2023 and the Awards Ceremony the same afternoon. This competition will be held in the new CSUC science building, utilizing several rooms. We are greatly in need of volunteers for many aspects of this event, including day-of-event supervision and room facilitation, set up and clean up. Day of event volunteer sign up
- If you would like to participate on our working committee whose responsibilities include: planning, publicity, assisting in Family Fun Nights, we are forming this group immediately. Working committee volunteer sign up
- If you are able to make a donation to the success of ongoing science investigations, competitions and collaborative innovation by supporting the 2023 Science Olympiad; please send your donation to:
